Part 2

Route 20

Route 20
Route 20 is a road that connects Floccesy Town and Virbank City. A river runs from the south all the way to Floccesy Ranch in the north. In autumn, the fallen leaves change the scenery dramatically. Hiker Jerome blocks the stairway to the east side of the route for now, and Hugh is nowhere to be found on the west side. He must have gone to Floccesy Ranch, so cross the bridge and head north.

Floccesy Ranch

Floccesy Ranch
Floccesy Ranch came about naturally as Pokémon and people gathered in the area. The ranch is owned and operated by a husband and wife. A rich forest lies just beyond the ranch's northern boundary.

When you try to enter the pastures to the west, Hugh runs up to challenge you to another battle.

After the battle, you deliver the extra Town Map to him. Just then, the ranch owner and his wife appear. She hands you a Potion, and he asks if either of you have seen their missing HerdierHugh gets angry at him for his careless attitude, and runs off to search for the dog. It's not in the pastures, so check the forest to the north. Hugh catches up to you near Janitor Orville to give you a Parlyz Heal. Go east to reach a grass patch with another Potion, then turn south to reach a clearing, where Herdier is cornered by a Team Plasma Grunt. Hugh dashes off to notify the owner, and the thug throws TM21 (Frustration) at you as a distraction while he escapes.
Now that you have delivered the extra Town Map and found the lost Herdier, you can return to Floccesy Town to have Alder help train your Pokémon.

Floccesy Town

Alder's house

After returning from Floccesy RanchAlder will ask you to battle his two students. Their Pokémon change depending on which starter Pokémon you chose, so keep type match-ups in mind.

Pledge Grove
When you step outside, you meet a man named Mr. Medal. He gives you a Medal Box, which lets you participate in the Medal Rally competition. You can earn a variety ofMedals during your adventure by meeting various conditions, like finding hidden items or evolving a Pokémon. Talk to Mr. Medal in any Pokémon Center to receive them. There are 255 different Medals to collect. Once he leaves, Alder steps outside to inform you that the Aspertia Gym has reopened.

Pledge Grove

The path behind Alder's house leads to Pledge Grove, a tiny clearing shrouded by trees. Bring Keldeo to inspect the deep cut marks on the boulder and it will learn Secret Sword, its signature move. As long as it knows this move, Keldeo will remain in its Resolute Form.

Aspertia City

Trainers' School

The boy blocking the entrance moves out of the way, so you can finally visit the Trainers' School. The large blackboard describes the various status conditions, like Poison or Paralysis, that can affect a Pokémon. Talk to the boy nearby to get an X Defend. In the back of the building, a girl teaches you how to cancel a Pokémon's evolution. Step through the back door to reach the Aspertia Gym. The man near the door, Clyde, will be waiting at every Gym to give you a Fresh Water.

Gym Leader: Cheren

The one who seeks the right path
The Aspertia Gym specializes in Normal-type Pokémon. Cheren's Pokémon all know the move Work Up, so defeat them quickly before getting hit by a powered-up attack. If you caught a Riolu in Floccesy Ranch, its Fighting-type attacks can inflict serious damage. If you're playing on Challenge Mode, then Riolu's Fighting-type attacks only inflict normal damage on Pidove so make use of Mareep's Electric-type attacks if you caught one inFloccesy Ranch. If you have a Pidove or Purrloin, you can use Growl to counter Work Up.

Defeated, Cheren awards you the Basic Badge, which makes all Pokémon up to level 20 obey, even those obtained in a trade. He also gives youTM83 (Work Up) as a prize.
Bianca is waiting for you outside the Gym. Impressed with your victory, she gives you TM27 (Return) as well as the C-GearCheren exits the Gym, and the three of you register each other's numbers in the Xtransceiver. Bianca also registers Professor Juniper's number for you. Just then, Hughshows up to challenge the Gym, and Cheren leads him to the battlefield. Bianca informs you that the next Gym is in Virbank City, east of Floccesy Ranch.

Floccesy Town

On your way back through Floccesy Town, Bianca shows up again to upgrade your Pokédex with the Habitat List, which shows every Pokémon seen and caught in an area. She also reminds you that Pokémon can sometimes be found in rustling grass before heading off again.

Route 20

Cheren and Hugh catch up to you at the bottom of the stairway. Cheren explains that stronger Pokémon, sometimes even two at once, can be found in patches of dark grass. He gives you a few Pecha Berries to help with Virbank Gym, then leaves. Hugh stays here to train in the dark grass for now.

Intro

After selecting New Game you are asked to choose your character's gender. This cannot be changed after selecting. The resident researcher of theUnova region, Professor Juniper, appears and introduces new Trainers to the Pokémon world. Her lecture is important for new players, though it's nothing new to veterans of the series. She also introduces the player's rival, Hugh. Once she is done talking, you are asked to enter your character's and your rival's names. The name cannot be changed, so double-check that you have what you want. Press OK and you are ready for your adventure!

Aspertia City

Aspertia City
Your journey begins in Aspertia City, on the western edge of Unova. The Aspertia Outlook on the north side of the city offers a fantastic view of the region, spreading out to the north. The Aspertia Gym is located in the backyard of the Trainers' School, but the school is closed at the moment, so your challenge will have to wait.

Home

Mom starts talking to you as you try to leave home. She asks if you want a Pokémon and aPokédex, so choose the obvious answer to show your determination to go on an adventure. She tells you that Professor Juniper's assistant, Bianca, is outside looking for you. The girl with the big green hat is not from around here, and may have gotten lost.
Outside, you meet your rival, Hugh. He already has a Pokémon, one he raised from an Egg, but wants someone to be his travelling partner. He offers to help you track down Bianca.

Aspertia Outlook

As you climb the stairway to the platform, Hugh is sure that Bianca is up there. Sure enough, she is here enjoying the view. She asks if you will help complete the Pokédex, so accept the task. Talk to her again and she shows you a container with three Poké Balls inside, giving you a chance to choose your new partner Pokémon.

  • The Grass-type Snivy has the most weaknesses of the trio, with five: Fire-, Bug-, Poison-, Flying-, and Ice-type attacks. However, it and its evolutions make up for this with their superior defenses. Its Grass attacks are strong against Rock-, Ground-, and Water-type Pokémon.
  • The Fire-type Tepig is great when battling Grass-, Bug-, Ice-, and Steel-type Pokémon, but is vulnerable to Water-, Ground-, and Rock-typeattacks. Tepig is unique amongst the Unova starters due to it gaining a secondary type as it grows, while Snivy and Oshawott do not. TheFighting-type adds two weaknesses, Flying and Psychic, but eliminates the Rock-type weakness. With their ability to learn Fighting moves (albeitonly two naturally) as well as Fire attacks, Tepig's evolutions have the most type advantages of the starter evolutions, with the added edge against Normal-, Rock-, and Dark-type Pokémon.
  • The Water-type Oshawott has an advantage when facing Fire-, Rock-, and Ground-type Pokémon, but may struggle against Grass- and Electric-type attacks. With only these two disadvantages even in its final form, Oshawott is arguably the safest choice of the three starters.
After choosing a Pokémon, Bianca asks if you would like to give it a nickname. After that, she hands over your very own Pokédex! When you try to leave, Hugh walks up and asks Bianca for his own Pokédex; luckily for him, she has an extra one. Then he challenges you to a battle.

501 If the player chose Oshawott:

There is very little strategy to this battle. Regardless of which two Pokémon battle, they each have a similar moveset, so neither has an advantage. The fight will be over in three turns, barring a critical hit. If you win, you earn PokémonDollar.png500 and your Pokémon gains enough experience to reach level 6. If you lose, it's not the end of the world at all and nothing bad happens, other than you missing out on the money. Don't feel bad if you do lose, though.

Pokémon Center

Hugh leaves, and Bianca leads you off for a tour of the local Pokémon Center. These hospitals restore your Pokémon to full health and eliminate any status ailments that may afflict them. She gives you a brief description of the PC, which has not changed much. Finally, she leads you to thePoké Mart counter, where you can buy and sell items. Before she leaves, she gives you ten Poké Balls to start you on your journey. Nice!
When you step outside, your Mom and Hugh's sister will show up. Mom gives you a pair of Running Shoes, which let you run by holding down the B Button. Hugh's sister gives you a Town Map, a map of the Unova region. She also gives you an extra map to take to her brother, who has already ventured out to Route 19. Next, Bianca tells you that she will demonstrate how to catch a Pokémon, so follow her north through the gate. The attendant inside gives you a free Potion on your way through.

Route 19

Route 19
Route 19 is a short road that connects Aspertia City and Floccesy Town. It is located at the base of a mountain, so the north side of the route is lined with cliffs.

Bianca is waiting just outside the gate. She demonstrates how to catch wild Pokémon by catching a wild Purrloin in the tall grass, and explains a bit more about registering the data in the Pokédex. Once she leaves, follow the path eastward where a man named Alder calls down to you from atop the cliff. This powerful Trainer offers to help train your Pokémon a little before jumping down and leading you to his home in Floccesy Town.
